Special Educational Needs

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all children and provide high quality teaching with high expectations set for all individuals. The Jersey Curriculum is our starting point for planning that meets the specific needs of individuals and groups of children. The Early Learning Goals are used in the Foundation Stage. When planning, teachers set appropriate learning challenges and respond to children’s diverse learning needs.

Some children may have barriers to learning that mean they may have Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and require specific action by the school to access the curriculum. Children may have SEND either at any time during their school career for various reasons.

The broad areas of need are:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Sensory and /or physical needs

Miss Wolstenholme is our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), and she is responsible for ensuring that children with SEND receive appropriate support. She works closely with Ms Rashid who is the overall Inclusion Lead.

Parents know their children best and should they have any concerns, we will listen, understand and aim to provide support. In the first instance, parents talk to their child’s class teacher, so that they are aware of any concerns and can plan accordingly, with individual targets. If appropriate, children are added to the school's Inclusion Register, and given additional support. The SENCo can make a referral to outside agencies such as speech and language or the occupational therapy  with consent of the parents.

PARM (Planning and Review Meeting)

Every term the SENCo has a meeting with a range of professionals that include the Headteacher, Educational Psychologist, Educational Welfare Officer, Emotional Well Being Officer and a member of the SEMHIT (Social, Emotional, Mental, Health Inclusion Team). In this meeting specific children are discussed and strategies discussed for meeting their needs.

If any referrals or plans are required, parents are kept informed.

There are times when we all need a little support and advice. Please have a look at the Jersey Online Directory to see the support and specialists that are available in our island. It is available at
